What did these cases decide about who counts as a child and an heir?

Without a will, state intestacy law picks the heirs, and the court must rule on every claim of kinship before the estate can be divided. Control of a body passes to the legal next of kin, so a guardian acting for a 5-month-old child can outrank the dead woman's mother and partner. A denied child who is later included in the will has no estate fight to bring, which is the result a timely acknowledgment would also have given.
