A fugitive baron died in Manila with two infant sons by two women, and the Lords gave his title to his half-brother after DNA ruled out one boy and bigamy the other

Antony Moynihan became 3rd Baron Moynihan in 1965 and sat in the Lords as a Liberal whip. Newsweek reported that in 1971 he fled Britain while police pursued allegations that he stole from casinos and paid for a Rolls-Royce with a bad cheque. He settled in Manila, which had no extradition treaty with Britain, and ran massage parlours and bars. PBS Frontline reported that after Marcos fell, the DEA turned him into an informant who secretly recorded Howard Marks. He married at least four times. He died of a stroke in Manila on 24 November 1991, and the barony became dormant. Two boys were put forward as heir. Andrew, born in 1989, was the son of his fourth wife, Editha, who said they had never formally divorced. Daniel was the son of Jinna, a Filipina office worker whom Moynihan had married while Editha was still his wife. In July 1996 British courts held his 1990 divorce from Editha invalid. The Committee for Privileges was shown what it called overwhelming genetic evidence that Andrew could not be Lord Moynihan's son. It found Daniel to be the child of a bigamous marriage and so illegitimate. In March 1997 the Lords found for his half-brother Colin Moynihan, a former Conservative minister. Colin sat as a hereditary peer until 29 April 2026, when the House of Lords (Hereditary Peers) Act 2026 took effect. On 12 May 2026 the government named him one of 26 new life peers.

What the law took from it

A title passes only through a valid marriage and a proven father; one of Moynihan's claimants failed on each count.

Record vs. record

Newsweek (January 1992) wrote that Daniel had "recently turned 1"; Wikipedia gives his birth as January 1985.
