Chaos. The law it tested: intestacy: the state writes the will.

What did these cases decide about intestacy: the state writes the will?

Without a will, state intestacy law picks the heirs, and the court must rule on every claim of kinship before the estate can be divided. When the heirs of an intestate estate hold it through a family corporation, a board majority can vote to sell heirlooms over another heir's objection. A musician with no will leaves his band partnership, his songs and his instruments to whoever survives him, and each becomes a separate lawsuit.
