Jayalalithaa left no will; a court gave her house to her niece and nephew, and the state took 21 kilos of her gold
J. Jayalalithaa, a former film actress†, was Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. She died in December 2016, unmarried and without children. On 27 May 2020 the Madras High Court declared her niece J. Deepa and nephew J. Deepak, children of her late brother Jayakumar, her Class II legal heirs. Her estate was put at about Rs 188 crore. Her house, Veda Nilayam in Poes Garden, was valued above Rs 100 crore. Followers had asked the court to hand the estate to the state's Administrator General; it refused. The state government took the house by ordinance and an order of 22 July 2020 to make it a memorial. On 24 November 2021 Justice N. Seshasayee quashed the acquisition, noting the state had already built her a mausoleum on Marina Beach. The heirs received the keys on 10 December 2021. Her party, the AIADMK, appealed. She had been convicted of holding disproportionate assets in 2014, acquitted by the High Court, and the state's appeal was pending when she died. In January 2025 a Bengaluru special court ordered the seized goods handed to Tamil Nadu: 21.3 kg of gold, 1,250 kg of silver, 91 watches, a silver sword, 10,500 saris and 750 pairs of shoes. The heirs said some came from her mother. The Supreme Court dismissed their plea, and the goods were handed over in February 2025.
A public figure with no will and no children leaves the estate to relatives the law picks and the assets the state claims.
