Robert Mugabe left about $10 million and no will, and a village chief fined his widow five cows and ordered his body dug up
Robert Mugabe ruled Zimbabwe for 37 years until a coup in November 2017. He died in Singapore on 6 September 2019, aged 95. After weeks of dispute with President Mnangagwa's government over where to bury him, his family buried him in the courtyard of his home in Kutama. In October 2019 his daughter Bona wrote to the Master of the High Court to register the estate. The family lawyer, Terrence Hussein, wrote: "Thus far, we have not been able to locate a will." The state newspaper, The Herald, reported about $10 million in a local bank, four houses in Harare including the Blue Roof mansion, one farm, a rural home, an orchard and ten vehicles. Under Zimbabwean law an estate without a will goes to the widow and the children. In May 2021 Chief Zvimba, Stanly Wurayayi Mhondoro, found that his widow, Grace, had broken custom by burying him at his home. He fined her five cows and a goat and ordered the body exhumed and reburied at the National Heroes Acre in Harare by 1 June 2021. The family spokesman, his nephew Leo Mugabe, said the chief had no jurisdiction over Kutama. On 10 September 2021 a magistrate's court ruled that the remains should be exhumed and reburied at the Heroes Acre. No exhumation has been reported in the sources found†.
A ruler who leaves no will leaves his heirs to list his assets in public, and leaves his burial to whoever holds power.
