José José's older children searched Miami hospitals and funeral homes for his body, and two wills name different heirs

José José, the Mexican singer known as the Prince of Song, had pancreatic cancer. In February 2018 his youngest daughter, Sarita Sosa, took him to live with her in Miami. His older children, Marysol and José Joel, whose mother is Anel Noreña, accused Sarita of taking him there by deception. Days before his death they filed a complaint to learn where he was. He died on 28 September 2019, aged 71. Sarita phoned them with the news. They flew to Miami the next day and could not find the body. They went from hospital to funeral home. Sarita did not answer their calls. Mexico's consul in Miami and Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard became involved, and the three siblings met at the consulate on 1 October. Sarita and her mother, Sara Salazar, his last wife, decided on cremation, and agreed that only half the ashes would go to Mexico. On 9 October his remains arrived on a Mexican army aircraft. About 35,000 people filed past in Mexico City, and he was buried in the Panteón Francés beside his mother. A will made in Mexico names Anel Noreña universal heir. Sara and Sarita say a later will made in Miami includes them. Marysol renounced her inheritance in a note written on a napkin. In 2023 the siblings were not speaking, and no court ruling had been reported.

What the law took from it

A parent who moves abroad near the end of life can leave two wills in two countries and children who cannot find his body.

Record vs. record

¡Hola! says the family split the ashes and half went to Mexico; La Razón describes his remains arriving in a gold coffin:
