Jim Morrison left everything to Pamela Courson; she died three years later without a will, and both sets of parents fought for The Doors' money
Jim Morrison was found dead in a Paris bathtub at 27. No autopsy was done, and he was buried at Père Lachaise cemetery. His will left everything to his companion, Pamela Courson. Courson died of a heroin overdose on 25 April 1974 at 27. She left no will and no children, so her parents, Columbus and Pearl Courson, inherited her rights to Morrison's estate. Morrison's parents sued. They contested the will and the claim that Jim and Pamela had a common-law marriage. Morrison's father was a US Navy admiral†; Pamela's father, Columbus "Corky" Courson, was a former Navy bombardier. Neither family had earned any of the money now in dispute. After years of litigation the families settled out of court, splitting the income about equally. Accounts differ on the terms; one says the Coursons kept control of his image and music†. Sources do not agree on the settlement year†. Corky Courson died in 2008 and Penny Courson in 2014.
A sole beneficiary who dies without a will passes the fortune to her own relatives, who may be strangers to the person who earned it.
