A Delhi court forced a former chief minister to give blood for a paternity test; his son won, and was killed a year after the father died
Narayan Dutt Tiwari was chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and later of Uttarakhand. In 2008 Rohit Shekhar filed a suit in the Delhi High Court saying Tiwari was his biological father; his mother was Ujjwala Sharma. Tiwari resisted. The court ordered DNA testing and, in 2011, compelled him to comply†. On 27 July 2012 the Delhi High Court released the result: Tiwari was Rohit Shekhar's biological father. In 2014 Tiwari said publicly, "I have accepted that Rohit Shekhar is my son." On 14 May 2014, aged 88, he married Ujjwala Sharma in Lucknow. Tiwari died in New Delhi on 18 October 2018, his 93rd birthday. On 16 April 2019 Rohit Shekhar was found dead in his bed. Delhi Police charged his wife, Apoorva Shukla, with smothering him. Rohit's mother told investigators that Apoorva had married him to gain access to the family property; that is an allegation, not a finding. Police filed a chargesheet in July 2019. As of the latest reporting found, the murder trial in Delhi had not ended and Apoorva had been refused bail several times†.
A paternity judgment makes a child an heir, and the property that comes with it can become the motive in the next family dispute.
