Prince Bernhard denied a secret daughter to the Lockheed inquiry, then left her and a second one a sixth of his estate each

Prince Bernhard married Princess Juliana in 1937; she reigned from 1948 to 1980. In 1976 a government inquiry, the Commissie van Drie, found that Lockheed had sent $1.1 million in bribes meant for him. During that inquiry he was asked about a child in California, and the commission's notes record no admission. A former aide, Tonny van Renterghem, had told the commission that a substantial sum was paid each month into a US account for "Alicia Webber". Press coverage of the scandal also reported a Paris flat Bernhard bought for his mistress Hélène Grinda, whose daughter Alexia was born on 10 July 1967. Bernhard died on 1 December 2004, aged 93. On 14 December de Volkskrant published interviews he had given since 2001 to Pieter Broertjes and Jan Tromp. He confirmed two daughters outside marriage: Alicia, born 21 June 1952 in San Francisco to a German pilot, and Alexia. He said each would receive one sixth of his estate, the same as each of his four daughters with Juliana. In 2009 Alicia, a garden designer in Fairfax, California, told HP/De Tijd that reports of a $45 million inheritance were wrong; a later report said she used her share to buy a house. In 2010 NOS found Van Renterghem's 1976 tip in the National Archives; the transcripts of Bernhard's own answers stay closed. In 2011 de Volkskrant reported that Queen Beatrix and her sisters had no contact with either half-sister.† whether that is still so in 2026.

What the law took from it

Naming children born outside marriage in the estate at equal shares turned a 50-year secret into a settled inheritance instead of a lawsuit.

Family version vs. the record

Bernhard's 1976 account to the commission recorded no child in California; NOS found the 1976 tip about payments to "Alicia Webber" in the National Archives and reported that the documents bear it out.
