Ilia Chavchavadze was shot dead on the road to his Saguramo estate in 1907, and the Georgian church made him a saint in 1987
Chavchavadze, a Georgian poet and public figure, was killed on the road from Tbilisi to his estate at Saguramo. Wikipedia and OrthodoxWiki date the killing to 28 August 1907; the Orthodox Church in America says 30 August. One account says militant social democrats shot him. Another says Soviet-era investigations concluded the Tsarist secret police and administration were involved, and the assassination remains controversial. The Military Court of the Caucasus sentenced the killers to death by hanging. His widow Olga Guramishvili asked the governor-general to pardon them, saying Ilia would have done the same. In 1987 the Georgian Orthodox Church's Holy Synod canonised him as Ilia the Righteous. His family estate at Tsinandali was not confirmed as part of this case; no source found†. Whether the sentences were carried out was not found†.
A public figure killed on the way to his own estate leaves a widow who may spare his killers, and a legacy the state and church later claim.
