Stanley was refused burial beside Livingstone in Westminster Abbey, and his papers were sold to Belgium in four parts

Henry Morton Stanley was baptised John Rowlands at Denbigh in 1841, the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Parry, then 18. A 2001 correction in the Dictionary of Welsh Biography argues that his father was a Denbigh solicitor, James Vaughan Horne. His mother left him with her father. When payments for his keep stopped, he went into St Asaph workhouse at about age six and stayed until 1856. When he was 10, his mother entered the workhouse with two half-siblings, and he did not recognise her until the headmaster told him†. He married Dorothy Tennant in Westminster Abbey on 12 July 1890. They adopted Denzil, son of one of Stanley's cousins†. Stanley's funeral service was held in the Abbey, but the Dean refused burial near Livingstone. Arthur Balfour wrote about the burial question on 11 May 1904. Stanley was buried at Pirbright, near his house Furze Hill, under a granite block inscribed "Bula Matari"†. Dorothy remarried in 1907 and died in 1926. Denzil gave about 300 objects to the Royal Museum for Central Africa in 1954 and died in 1959. In 1982 Denzil's stepson Richard sold the Furze Hill papers to the Belgian state, with Société Générale de Belgique paying. In 2000 the family found four more boxes, which the King Baudouin Foundation funded the museum to buy. Christie's auctioned the contents of Furze Hill on 24 September 2002 and sold more lots in 2003. Since 2003 the whole archive, including Stanley's will, belongs to the Foundation and is kept at Tervuren.

What the law took from it

If an archive is not left to a named institution, heirs sell it in parts, often to buyers abroad.

Family version vs. the record

Stanley's Autobiography, edited by Dorothy, who removed references to other women, describes cruelty in the workhouse ( The 2001 Dictionary of Welsh Biography correction says there is no basis for that account of cruelty (
