DNA tests in 2010 found that Tutankhamun's parents were brother and sister, and that the two stillborn girls buried in his tomb were his daughters
Tutankhamun died at about 19 with no living heir. In his tomb, KV62, Howard Carter found an undecorated wooden box and numbered it 317. It held two small resin-coated coffins, each with a smaller gilded coffin and a tiny mummy inside. Carter unwrapped only the smaller one. In 1932 both were autopsied and identified as stillborn girls. In February 2010 the King Tutankhamun Family Project, led by Zahi Hawass, published DNA and CT results on 16 royal mummies in the Journal of the American Medical Association. It identified the man from tomb KV55 as Tutankhamun's father, most probably Akhenaten, and the "Younger Lady" from tomb KV35 as his mother. She was the KV55 man's full sister. Both were children of Amenhotep III and Queen Tiye. A lock of hair inscribed with Tiye's name, found in a nest of miniature coffins in Tutankhamun's tomb, had been matched to the "Elder Lady" from KV35, and DNA confirmed she was Tiye. The study found the girls were probably Tutankhamun's daughters. A mummy from tomb KV21 may be their mother, and so possibly his wife Ankhesenamun, but that result was not statistically secure. The radiologist Sahar Saleem later found the girls died at 24 and 36 weeks of pregnancy and that the smaller one had been fully mummified. The throne passed to the vizier Ay. Tutankhamun's mummy lies in KV62.
A family that marries within itself to keep a throne can end with no surviving child to inherit it.
The JAMA authors name the father as most probably Akhenaten ( National Geographic's report says Smenkhkare cannot be ruled out ( and other scholars favour Smenkhkare (
