King Hussein of Jordan removed his brother as heir after 34 years, two weeks before he died
Prince Hassan bin Talal was named crown prince of Jordan in 1965 and held the position for 34 years. In January 1999 King Hussein returned from cancer treatment at the Mayo Clinic. On 25 January he issued a decree naming his eldest son Abdullah as crown prince and published a letter criticising Hassan's conduct during his absence. He flew back to the United States, returned to Jordan in a coma and died on 7 February. Abdullah became king. He named his half-brother Hamzah crown prince, as Hussein had wished, and removed him in 2004 in favour of his own son Hussein. In April 2021 Hamzah was placed under house arrest and accused of plotting with foreign parties. Two former officials, Bassem Awadallah and Sharif Hassan bin Zaid, were convicted of sedition in July 2021 and sentenced to 15 years. Hamzah renounced his title of prince in April 2022. Hassan, passed over in 1999, remains a member of the royal family with no role in the succession.
A succession changed late in life leaves the passed-over heirs as a standing rival faction.
