The "twin kings" of Surakarta

Two half-brothers were each crowned Pakubuwono XIII in 2004, and in 2025 two of the next king's sons each took the title Pakubuwono XIV

Pakubuwono XII of Surakarta died in June 2004 without a formally appointed queen consort, so no son was clearly heir. On 31 August 2004 senior relatives enthroned his son Tedjowulan as Pakubuwono XIII. Supporters of his half-brother Hangabehi shut the palace doors, and the ceremony was held in a relative's house 3 kilometres away. Hangabehi was installed at the palace on 10 September 2004†. Solo had "twin kings" for eight years. In 2012, in a deal brokered by Mayor Joko Widodo, Tedjowulan gave up the title and became chief minister. In 2014 the palace's customary council, led by the king's sister Gusti Moeng, stripped Hangabehi of his title and named an acting sultan; he was barred from the palace until April 2017. In February 2022 Pakubuwono XIII named Purbaya, his son by his third wife, crown prince. He died on 2 November 2025. On 5 November, at the funeral, Purbaya declared himself Pakubuwono XIV. On 13 November the customary council and relatives named the eldest son, Hangabehi (born 1985, formerly Mangkubumi), as Pakubuwono XIV. A sister said he had betrayed the family. Tedjowulan, acting for the throne under a 2017 ministry decree, asked both sides to hold back. Purbaya was crowned on 15 November 2025; Hangabehi held his coronation on 5 September 2026. Both claim the throne.

What the law took from it

A ruler who names no heir under agreed rules leaves the palace to whichever side holds the doors.
