Saudi King Faisal was shot by his nephew during an audience, and the nephew was beheaded in a Riyadh square

King Faisal had ruled Saudi Arabia since 1964 and led the 1973 Arab oil embargo. On 25 March 1975, during a public audience (majlis) in Riyadh, his nephew Prince Faisal bin Musaid stepped forward as if to greet him and shot him with a pistol. The king died in hospital. The nephew had recently returned from studying in the United States. His brother Khalid bin Musaid had been killed by security forces in 1965 during a protest against the opening of Saudi television, which King Faisal had approved†. The assassin was declared sane, convicted of regicide and publicly beheaded in Riyadh on 18 June 1975. The throne passed the same day to Faisal's half-brother Khalid, with Fahd as crown prince, under the rule that the crown moves among the sons of Ibn Saud. That system held until 2017, when King Salman made his own son Mohammed crown prince. Faisal is buried in an unmarked grave in Riyadh's Al Oud cemetery, as Wahhabi practice requires†.

What the law took from it

A succession rule known in advance let the throne pass within hours of a murder.
