Spain's King Felipe renounced his father's inheritance after a $100 million Saudi payment came to light, and Juan Carlos left for Abu Dhabi
Juan Carlos I restored democracy in Spain after Franco. In April 2012 he broke his hip on an elephant hunt in Botswana with Corinna Larsen, a businesswoman. He abdicated in 2014 in favour of his son Felipe. Swiss prosecutors later found that in 2008 a Panamanian foundation linked to him had received $100 million from the King of Saudi Arabia, and that in 2012 he had transferred about €65 million to Larsen†. On 15 March 2020 the palace announced that Felipe renounced any personal inheritance from his father and withdrew his father's public allowance. In August 2020 Juan Carlos moved to Abu Dhabi. Swiss prosecutors closed their inquiry in 2021 and Spanish prosecutors closed theirs in March 2022, citing immunity, time limits and tax payments he had made†. Larsen sued him for harassment in London. In 2022 the Court of Appeal held he had immunity for acts before his abdication, and in October 2023 the High Court ruled England had no jurisdiction. He published a memoir in 2025†.
An heir can renounce an inheritance in advance to separate his own position from his father's money.
