Herzl's testament asked for his children to lie beside him; Israel buried his suicide son and his daughter there 76 years after their deaths

Theodor Herzl led the movement for a Jewish state in the 1890s. He spent most of his personal fortune on it. He died in 1904 and was buried in Vienna. His testament asked that he be moved to the Land of Israel once there was a state, and that his children be buried beside him. In 1949 Israel moved his body to the Jerusalem hill now called Mount Herzl. His parents and sister were later buried next to him. His children were not. In summer 1930 his daughter Pauline was arrested in Bordeaux for vagrancy. She died in September 1930, aged 40, apparently of a morphine overdose. Her brother Hans, 39, killed himself before her funeral. He had converted to Christianity six years earlier. The rabbi of Bordeaux, Joseph Hacohen, allowed his burial beside his sister in the Jewish cemetery. The historian Ariel Feldstein says the two did not fit the image the state wanted of its founder. The youngest daughter, Trude, died in Theresienstadt in 1943; her remains were never found. Her son, Stephen Norman, Herzl's only grandson, worked at the British Embassy in Washington. In November 1946, after learning his parents had died, he jumped from the Massachusetts Avenue bridge. On 20 September 2006 Pauline and Hans were buried on Mount Herzl at a state ceremony attended by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. The head of the Jewish Agency called it "human justice." Stephen Norman was reburied in Jerusalem on 5 December 2007.

What the law took from it

A testament can name where a family is buried, but the people who control the grave decide whether it is followed.

Record vs. record

The Los Angeles Times reported that Hans killed himself the day after Pauline died; Jüdische Allgemeine says the day before her funeral:
