Sun Hung Kai's chairman was removed by his mother and brothers, who said he was mentally ill, and cut from the family trust
Kwok Tak-seng founded Sun Hung Kai Properties and left control in a family trust. His eldest son Walter Kwok became chairman, with brothers Thomas and Raymond as vice-chairmen. In 2008 their mother, Kwong Siu-hing, who controlled the trust, sided with the two younger sons. Walter was removed as chairman on 27 May 2008. The family cited mental illness; Walter denied it and sued his siblings for libel, then dropped the suit. Reports linked the rift to the influence of a woman in Walter's life†. In October 2010 his mother removed him as a beneficiary of the trust. He said he had a document entitling him to one third. Walter lost an arbitration in Switzerland, and was later restored to the trust in a deal under which he left the company permanently. In December 2014 Thomas Kwok was convicted of bribing Hong Kong's former chief secretary Rafael Hui and sentenced to five years; Raymond was acquitted. Walter died in 2018.
Whoever controls the family trust decides which son runs the company, and which son is a beneficiary.
