The Ranbaxy brothers sold their drug company for billions, owed the buyer Rs 3,500 crore, and were arrested over their lender
Malvinder and Shivinder Singh inherited control of Ranbaxy, India's largest drugmaker, and sold it to Japan's Daiichi Sankyo in 2008. A Singapore arbitral tribunal later found they had hidden US regulatory probes from the buyer and awarded Daiichi about Rs 3,500 crore. The Delhi High Court upheld the award on January 31, 2018, and the Supreme Court dismissed the brothers' appeal in February 2019. In April 2019 the court warned they could be jailed for non-compliance, and in November 2019 it held them in contempt. The brothers also lost control of Fortis Healthcare and Religare. In 2018 Shivinder filed and then withdrew a case against Malvinder, and the brothers accused each other publicly†. In December 2018 Religare Finvest filed a criminal complaint, and in October 2019 Delhi Police arrested both brothers over alleged fraud estimated at Rs 740 crore or more. The Enforcement Directorate then took them into custody in a money-laundering case.
Heirs who sell the family company still carry the liability for what they did not disclose.
