Historical event
The end of Stanley Ho's Macau casino monopoly in 2002 and the succession at SJM Holdings

Stanley Ho sued 11 defendants, including 2 of his wives and 5 of his children, hours after saying on television he would not sue his family

Stanley Ho held a Macau casino monopoly from the early 1960s until 2002. Lanceford, a company he beneficially owned until January 2011, held 31.655% of STDM, the controlling shareholder of SJM Holdings. On 26 January 2011, aged 89, hours after saying on television he would not sue, Ho filed a High Court writ against 11 defendants, including 2 of his wives and 5 children of his second wife, alleging that new Lanceford shares issued without his consent had diluted his stake to nothing. The action was discontinued on 29 January, a second suit against relatives including daughters Pansy and Daisy Ho was discontinued on 21 February, and on 8 March 2011 the family reached a settlement whose terms were not disclosed. Ho died on 26 May 2020, aged 98, without a will. He had 17 children with 4 women he called his wives. His daughters Deborah and Pansy were among relatives who lodged probate caveats. In November 2021 the High Court heard that Pansy Ho valued the estate at HK$1.72 billion or more and Angela Ho, a daughter of his first wife, at HK$11 billion. On 19 April 2022 Justice Wilson Chan Ka-shun refused Angela's request to add 2 Alvarez & Marsal administrators, leaving KPMG's Patrick Cowley and Rosalie Lui as sole administrators, and called her cost argument "plainly unrealistic". In March 2025 the administrators sued 18 descendants, including Pansy and Mario Ho, for directions on the costs of defending a claim by the executor of Ho's late sister, Winnie Ho. Her son and executor, Michael Hotung, claims more than HK$2 billion in STDM dividends he says went unpaid from 2007. In September 2025 the High Court stayed that claim against the estate pending STDM's receipt of the court papers, after the estate's counsel argued the case belonged in Macau. Status: Hotung's claim (HCA 37/2019) stayed in the Hong Kong High Court since September 2025; no later ruling found.

What the law took from it

An owner who dies without a will leaves the court to choose administrators when heirs disagree, and lawsuits begun against him in life continue against those administrators.
