The death of Indonesia's leading conglomerate founder

A Sinar Mas son was left 1 billion rupiah, sued his half-brothers over an estate he put at 649 trillion rupiah, and lost his status as a legitimate child

Eka Tjipta Widjaja founded the Sinar Mas group. He died in January 2019. After the funeral, the family carried out his notarial will of 25 April 2008, deed No. 60. It named 34 people. Freddy Widjaja, one of his sons, received 1 billion rupiah. The named gifts totalled 76 billion rupiah, and the remainder went to five of Freddy's half-brothers. Freddy said the remaining assets were never listed. In February 2020 the Central Jakarta District Court recognised him as a legitimate child. In June 2020 he sued the five half-brothers there for half of 12 group assets. On 3 August 2020 he withdrew, saying he had dreamed for two or three days that his father told him to make peace. On 10 August he sued again in South Jakarta, challenging the 2008 will and claiming an estate he valued at 649 trillion rupiah, including shares in Indah Kiat, Tjiwi Kimia, Bank Sinar Mas, Golden Energy Mines and Paper Excellence. Sinar Mas said he had already received his share and that Eka held no shares in the companies named. Three half-siblings appealed his legitimacy ruling. On 10 December 2020 the Supreme Court annulled his status as a legitimate child. In April 2021 the defendants refused mediation. In January 2022 the South Jakarta court rejected his suit. He reported three half-siblings to police for alleged forgery; police closed the inquiry in October 2022, finding no crime, and he asked for it to be reopened.

What the law took from it

A child's claim to an estate rose and fell with a separate court ruling on whether he was legally a child of the deceased.
