Sidhu Moose Wala's parents won his song copyright in court, had a son by IVF at 58, and were questioned by the state over the baby

Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, known as Sidhu Moose Wala, was shot dead in Mansa district at 28. Media reports said the killers acted for Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar and jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. His parents, Balkaur Singh and Charan Kaur, became his heirs. His posthumous song "SYL" drew nearly 30 million views before YouTube blocked it in India after a legal complaint from the Indian government. Merchant Records, owned by composers Salim and Sulaiman Merchant, planned to release "Jaandi Vaar," a duet he recorded in July 2021. The parents sued. On 17 November 2022 Civil Judge Sumit Bhalla in Mansa (CS 629 of 2022) found a prima facie case that the copyright passed to the parents and barred release until the suit is decided. On 17 March 2024 Charan Kaur, 58, gave birth to a son by IVF. They named him Shubhdeep. The ART Act sets an age limit of 50. The Union Health Ministry had written to Punjab on 14 March asking for an action-taken report. Balkaur Singh said officials asked for the baby's documents and accused the state of harassment. On 11 February 2026 the parents sat in protest outside the Mansa police chief's office. They allege three promoters, Bunty Bains, Gurpreet Singh Bhasin and Shabbir Momin, withheld royalty audits. No FIR had been registered.

What the law took from it

An artist who dies without assigning his unreleased recordings leaves his heirs to prove ownership against the label that holds the tapes.
