Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar were born in Peshawar houses their families left at partition, the new owners refused to sell, and the province took both by compulsory purchase

Dewan Basheswarnath Kapoor built a two-storey house of about 1,400 square feet in old Peshawar in 1922. His son Prithviraj was the first Kapoor in films. The family moved to India after partition, and Raj Kapoor never went back to the house before his death in 1988. Dilip Kumar's family house stood nearby in Mohalla Khudadad. Both houses passed to new owners. Barkat Ali, the Kapoor house's owner in 2021, said it had been bought at a 1968 auction. In 2020 the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government sealed the Kapoor house to stop its demolition and said it would make both houses museums. The owners objected. The Kapoor house's owner said it was worth more than 1 billion rupees; the Dilip Kumar house's owners asked 7 crore rupees per marla. The province used the Land Acquisition Act of 1894. In 2021 possession passed to the provincial Directorate of Archaeology. On 28 April 2023 the Peshawar High Court sent a separate ownership claim by Saeed Muhammad, whose father had bought the Kapoor house at auction, to the civil courts. In December 2024 WION reported that the owners had been paid 11.5 million rupees for the Kapoor house and 7.2 million for Dilip Kumar's, and that the World Bank would fund restoration with an initial 200 million rupees.

What the law took from it

A family that leaves at partition loses the house, and its fame can later raise the price for someone else.
