Kishore Kumar's nephew agreed to sell his childhood home for Rs 14 crore, his son published a legal notice to stop it, and the house became a ruin

Kishore Kumar was born Abhas Kumar Ganguly in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh. His last rites were performed at the family house, Gauri Kunj, also called Ganguly House, in the Bombay Bazar area. The two-storey house covers about 7,200 to 7,655 square feet and was occupied by 11 tenant families. In 2017 the municipal corporation ordered it vacated as unsafe. In May 2018 local papers reported a deal to sell it to Mumbai builder Abhay Jain for about Rs 14 crore. The seller was Arjun Kumar, son of Kishore's brother Anup Kumar. Arjun said Kishore gave the property to his father and that 75 percent was in his name. Kishore's son Amit Kumar claims 25 percent. In July 2018 Amit's advocate, Gupteshwar Soni, published a notice in Khandwa newspapers warning buyers that the property is "jointly registered in the name of Amit Kumar and Arjun Kumar in revenue records" and cannot be sold without Amit's consent. The notice said the property was never mutated and the family does not know which part belongs to whom. Jain said registration could take a year because parts were in dispute. Fans asked the state to acquire it as a heritage site. On 4 August 2026 Patrika reported the house a ruin, its rooms locked for about 40 years, and said his sons Amit and Sumit had not visited since the funeral. No completed sale has been reported.

What the law took from it

Ancestral property left unpartitioned in revenue records cannot be sold, kept up or saved until every branch agrees.
