Majid Al Futtaim died with ten heirs and a $16 billion mall group, and a court set up by Dubai's ruler gave government appointees five of nine board seats
Majid Al Futtaim built a group that controls about $16.5 billion in assets, including the Mall of the Emirates, an indoor ski slope and the Carrefour franchise for more than 300 stores across the Middle East, Africa and Asia. He died on 17 December 2021. Bloomberg valued his fortune at about $6.1 billion. Ten people had claims: three wives, one son and six daughters. His only surviving son, Tariq, had been a board member since 2011. Two other sons had died in separate boating accidents. Under Islamic law Tariq would receive the largest single share. The heirs split into four groups with separate lawyers. In February 2022 Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum appointed a special judicial committee, headed by Essa Kazim, to settle disputes over the estate. "It had one owner, and now it has nine owners," said Habib Al Mulla, lawyer for Tariq's family. One widow transferred her holding to her daughters. In June 2025 the committee restructured the board of the parent company, Majid Al Futtaim Capital: five government representatives and four family members, chaired by Fadel Al Ali, head of the Dubai Financial Services Authority. The company said its operations were unaffected.
A founder who leaves a single company to many heirs under fixed shares should leave rules for who runs it, or the state may write them.
