Magna founder Frank Stronach sued his daughter and grandchildren over the family's racing empire
Frank Stronach founded the auto parts maker Magna International and later The Stronach Group, which owned racetracks including Santa Anita and Pimlico†. He resigned from the group in 2013 to run for office in Austria, leaving his daughter Belinda Stronach, a former Canadian cabinet minister, in charge. On October 1, 2018 he sued Belinda, his grandchildren Nicole and Frank Walker, and executive Alon Ossip over management of the racing and gambling businesses, alleging they had failed to honour commitments. The claim was reported at about C$520 million†. Belinda countersued†. On August 13, 2020 the family announced a settlement splitting the empire. Frank and his wife Elfriede took the stallion and breeding business, the North American farms and all European assets. Belinda kept racing, gaming and real estate. In 2024 Frank Stronach was charged with sexual offences involving multiple complainants, which he denied; on June 19, 2026 he was found guilty of indecent assault and sexual assault, and one count later ended in a mistrial.
A founder who hands control to a child but keeps an economic stake keeps a reason to sue.
