MacKenzie Scott left her marriage with 4 percent of Amazon and gave Jeff Bezos the votes
Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos married in 1993 and moved to Seattle, where he founded Amazon in 1994; she was one of its first employees†. They announced their divorce in January 2019. Washington is a community property state, where assets acquired during a marriage are generally split evenly. Instead, under the April 2019 settlement she kept 25 percent of their Amazon stock, about 4 percent of the company, valued at about $35.6 billion, and gave him 75 percent plus voting control of her shares. She also gave up her interests in The Washington Post and Blue Origin. The settlement left him Amazon's largest shareholder with his voting power intact. She took the name MacKenzie Scott and began giving away her fortune at a rate of billions a year†. Filings show she cut her Amazon stake by 42 percent in one year and held about 81.1 million shares as of a later September 30 disclosure.
A divorce can split ownership and still leave voting control with the founder if the spouse agrees.
