Kirk Kerkorian left $2 billion to charity, and his 57-day wife was paid to go away

Kirk Kerkorian built Las Vegas hotels and owned MGM three times†. He died at 98 with an estate of about $2 billion. Most of it went to charity, distributed by a three-person committee within three years. In 2014, at 97, he married Una Davis, born in 1966. The marriage lasted 57 days and divorce proceedings were under way when he died. Davis made claims against the estate†. In December 2018 the estate settled with her for $12.5 million, plus $10 million and $50 million to two foundations she advises. Kerkorian had a history of short marriages in court. His 1999 marriage to tennis player Lisa Bonder lasted about a month. He disputed paternity of her daughter, and DNA testing showed the father was film producer Steve Bing. Bing later sued Kerkorian over privacy, and Bonder's lawyers were sued over links to convicted wiretapper Anthony Pellicano.

What the law took from it

A late marriage with a divorce pending still gives the spouse standing to sue the estate.
