Jerry Garcia's widow barred his ex-wives from his funeral and stopped paying his $5 million divorce settlement
Jerry Garcia died of a heart attack at a drug treatment center. His third wife, filmmaker Deborah Koons, whom he had married in 1994, became co-executor. At the funeral on 12 August 1995 she barred two of his former wives. Garcia had agreed in a separation settlement to pay his second wife, Carolyn "Mountain Girl" Adams, $250,000 a year for 20 years, about $5 million. After his death the estate stopped paying. A California judge ruled the agreement binding. In 1998 the estate settled with Adams for about $1.2 million; sources give $1.2 million or $1.25 million. On 4 April 1996 Koons and Bob Weir scattered half of Garcia's ashes in the Ganges at Rishikesh, India; the rest went into San Francisco Bay. Koons did not allow Adams to attend. Garcia's will left his guitars to their builder, Doug Irwin. The surviving band members disputed this, and Irwin won in 2001.
A divorce settlement is a debt of the estate, and a new spouse acting as executor cannot cancel it.
