Gail Zappa left two of her children control of Frank Zappa's estate, and Dweezil was told he could not use his own surname for his band
Frank Zappa died of prostate cancer in 1993 and left his estate to his wife, Gail, who ran it through the Zappa Family Trust. Gail died in 2015. Her will gave Ahmet and Diva Zappa 30 percent each and Dweezil and Moon Zappa 20 percent each. Ahmet and Diva became trustees. Dweezil and Moon were beneficiaries with no vote. The trust's lawyer said Ahmet had helped Gail make deals and the other two had shown little interest. Moon said she was "completely blindsided" after caring for her mother in her last year. Dweezil said the siblings were "like shareholders who have no say." The trust owned "Zappa" as a trademark and told Dweezil he could not use the name "Zappa Plays Zappa" for the tribute band he had led since 2006. He renamed it. Dweezil said the estate was "beyond broke" from Gail's litigation; Ahmet said it would recover. In 2022 the trust sold the Zappa catalogue to Universal Music Group†.
Unequal shares plus control in the hands of some heirs makes the others outsiders to a family name they also carry.
