Dart Group's founder fired his son during his own divorce, then married on his deathbed and cut his children out of his will

Herbert Haft founded Dart Drug in Washington and built the Dart Group, which controlled Crown Books, Trak Auto and Total Beverage. In 1993 he owned 57 percent; his son Robert owned 8.3 percent; his wife Gloria controlled 18 percent and sided with Robert. During a bitter divorce from Gloria after 45 years of marriage, Herbert fired the boards of Dart Group, Crown Books and Trak Auto and removed Robert as president of the book and auto chains. Robert sued, and suits and countersuits followed, with sons Robert and Ronald both fighting for control. Robert won a jury verdict in his wrongful-dismissal suit†. The courts settled the dispute in 1995†. In 1998 Richfood bought the remainder of Dart Group, except Crown Books, for $200 million. Herbert married Myrna Ruben shortly before his death in 2004 and left his children out of his will; a son sued for $2 million†.

What the law took from it

A founder's divorce can become a fight for the company when his spouse and children hold voting shares.
