Atahualpa's captains hanged Huáscar's wives and children on the Cuzco road, burned a dead king's mummy, and killed Huáscar so Pizarro could not free him
Huayna Capac died of smallpox near Quito in 1527. Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa records that Cuzco raised his son Huáscar as Inca. Another son, Atahualpa, stayed in the north and said his father had left him poor and dishonoured. Huáscar tortured and killed the nobles who had brought his father's body home, then declared war. Pedro Pizarro, a conquistador who was there, wrote that the dead kings' households held "all that was best" in the kingdom, and that Huáscar said he would bury the mummies and take everything they owned. The nobles turned against him. Atahualpa's generals Chalco Chima and Quizquiz captured Huáscar. Atahualpa then sent Cusi Yupanqui to Cuzco with orders to leave no relative or friend of Huáscar alive. Sarmiento records that Huáscar's wives, some pregnant, were hung with their children from poles along the road to Xaquixahuana, and that more than 80 of his sons and daughters were killed in front of him. The household of the dead king Tupac Inca Yupanqui had backed Huáscar, so its steward and family were hanged and Tupac Inca's mummy was burned to ashes outside the city. After Francisco Pizarro seized Atahualpa and asked to see his brother, Atahualpa ordered Huáscar killed. In 1533 a captain killed him at Antamarca, cut up the body and threw it into the Yanamayu river. Pizarro then executed Atahualpa.
An estate held by the dead can become the cause of a war among the living when the heir decides to take it back.
Sarmiento says Tupac Inca's mummy was burned in 1533 (chapter 67): | Garcilaso de la Vega says he saw Tupac Inca Yupanqui's body intact in Polo de Ondegardo's house before he left Peru (Royal Commentaries, book 5):
