Amanda Bynes lived under her mother's conservatorship for nine years
Amanda Bynes starred on Nickelodeon as a teenager. In 2012 and 2013 she faced driving charges in Los Angeles County, including a suspected DUI after her car clipped a sheriff's cruiser, and drug charges in New York. On July 22, 2013, Ventura County deputies detained her after she set a small fire in front of a stranger's home in Thousand Oaks. She was held for a psychiatric evaluation under California's 5150 law. Her parents filed for conservatorship soon after, and her mother, Lynne, was granted temporary control of her affairs in August 2013†. The conservatorship oversaw her personal and professional affairs for nine years. In February 2022, three months after a judge ended Britney Spears' 13-year conservatorship, Bynes petitioned to end hers. Her mother did not object. A lawyer for her parents said they were "happy, thrilled" and that professionals said she was ready to make her own decisions. On March 22, 2022, Ventura County Judge Roger Lund granted the petition in a hearing of about five minutes. "The conservatorship is no longer needed or required," he said. Bynes was not in the courtroom.
A conservatorship can be ended by petition when the person shows capacity, and a parent who does not object shortens the process.
