Robin Williams's widow and three children fought in a San Francisco court over his belongings, and the children got more than 85 watches
Robin Williams died at his home in Paradise Cay, near Tiburon, California, on 11 August 2014, aged 63. His death was ruled a suicide. He had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, and the autopsy found diffuse Lewy body dementia. His trust left his memorabilia, entertainment awards and some other personal items to his three children from earlier marriages, Zak, Zelda and Cody. In December 2014 his widow, Susan Schneider Williams, petitioned San Francisco Superior Court to exclude the contents of their Tiburon home from the children's share. She said items had been "unilaterally removed" and asked that his watches not count as jewelry. In January 2015 the children replied that her petition was "adding insult to a terrible injury." In March 2015 The Hollywood Reporter reported that the trust gave the rights to his name, likeness, signature and photographs to the Windfall Foundation, a charity he created, and barred commercial use of his image for 25 years after his death. On 30 March 2015 Judge Andrew Cheng gave the parties until 1 June to negotiate; the home's inventory listed 1,200 items. They settled on 25 September 2015. Susan keeps the house for life with living expenses, plus a watch he often wore, a bike from their honeymoon and their wedding gifts. People reported that the children received more than 50 bikes and over 85 watches. They also kept thousands of undisputed items, including his Academy Award. The settlement was subject to court approval. In October 2025 Zelda asked the public to stop sending her AI videos of her father. In August 2026 the three children revived his Instagram account to counter "rampant AI abuse of his voice and likeness." The trust's 25-year bar on commercial use runs until August 2039.
When a trust gives a spouse the house and the children the personal property, words such as "jewelry" and "memorabilia" decide who owns each object inside it.
