Britney Spears's father ran her money for 13 years on $16,000 a month, a judge removed him, and she paid to end the fight
In 2008 a Los Angeles Superior Court judge placed Britney Spears under a conservatorship. Her father, Jamie Spears, controlled her estate for most of the next 13 years while she recorded albums and played a Las Vegas residency. In July 2021 her new lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, filed to remove him. The filing alleged that Jamie Spears paid himself $16,000 a month from her estate since 2009, $2,000 more than she received, plus $2,000 a month for office costs. It alleged he also took 1.5 percent of the gross from the Las Vegas residency, at least $2.1 million. In August 2021 he said he would step down. On 29 September 2021 Judge Brenda Penny suspended him and called his role "toxic" to his daughter's well-being. An accountant took over the estate. On 12 November 2021 Judge Penny ended the conservatorship in a hearing of under 30 minutes, without ordering a mental health evaluation. No party objected. Jamie Spears then asked the court to have his daughter pay more than $2 million in fees to law firms he had hired as conservator. Her lawyers objected. A trial over the fees and his handling of her money was set for May 2024. In April 2024 the two sides settled on confidential terms. Rosengart said she has no further involvement in the case.
A conservator can be paid from the estate he controls, so the person under it must fight with her own money to get him out.
