A London judge awarded a Russian oligarch's ex-wife £453 million, then found their son had helped hide it
Farkhad Akhmedov made his fortune selling his stake in the Russian gas company Northgas. On 15 December 2016 Mr Justice Haddon-Cave ordered him to pay his ex-wife Tatiana Akhmedova £453,576,152, about 41.5 percent of his assets. He did not attend and did not pay. The judge later called his conduct "an elaborate and contumacious campaign to evade and frustrate the enforcement of the judgment debt." Akhmedova chased a 115-metre superyacht, Luna, to Dubai, where she had it seized; a Dubai court later released it†. For years enforcement recovered only about £5 million. In 2020 she sued their son Temur, a London trader, saying he had helped move his father's money. In April 2021 Mrs Justice Knowles found Temur "a dishonest individual who will do anything to assist his father" and ordered him to pay his mother about £75 million. Mother and son faced each other in court. In 2021 Akhmedova accepted a settlement from her ex-husband, ending five years of enforcement; the terms were not made public†.
An English judgment can follow assets to offshore trusts, yachts and family members, but collecting it can cost years.
