Whitney Houston left everything to her daughter; three years later the daughter died and the money went to Whitney's mother and brothers
Whitney Houston drowned in suite 434 of the Beverly Hilton the night before the 2012 Grammy Awards; heart disease and cocaine contributed. Her will, last updated in 2004, was approved in Fulton County, Georgia, in March 2012. It left everything in a trust for her only child, Bobbi Kristina Brown. The trust paid 10 percent at 21, 30 percent at 25 and the rest at 30. Bobbi Kristina had appeared in the reality shows "Being Bobby Brown" (2005) and "The Houstons: On Our Own" (2012-13). On 31 January 2015 she was found face down in a bathtub in Alpharetta, Georgia. She died in hospice on 26 July 2015, aged 22, having received only the first 10 percent. Under Whitney's will the trust then passed to Whitney's mother, Cissy, and her brothers Michael and Gary. Bobby Brown, the father, could inherit only from Bobbi Kristina's own estate. In November 2016 a Georgia judge entered a $36.25 million default judgment against her partner, Nick Gordon, for her death. He was never charged and died of a heroin overdose on 1 January 2020. In 2019 Primary Wave bought half of Whitney's estate assets in a deal valuing them at $14 million. Cissy Houston died on 7 October 2024. In 2026 Pat Houston, Gary's wife, remains executor.
A staggered trust protected the money from a young heir, and its remainder clause decided where it went when she died; her father was outside it.
