Wendy Williams has been under a guardianship since 2022 and is still asking a New York court to end it
Wendy Williams hosted a daily talk show for 13 years†. In 2022 a New York court placed her under guardianship, and lawyer Sabrina Morrissey became her guardian. In February 2024 her care team announced diagnoses of frontotemporal dementia and aphasia†. A 2025 round of medical testing reaffirmed those diagnoses, and the guardianship was extended. Williams has said publicly she is not incapacitated and wants her life back†. Her guardian told the court she refused mental-health testing. Her ex-husband, Kevin Hunter, sued Morrissey in federal court for $250 million; a judge rejected his bid to sue on Williams's behalf as her "next friend," though he may refile in his own name. As of 27 August 2026 Williams remained under the guardianship. No date for a ruling on ending it has been reported.
A durable power of attorney signed while competent can keep a guardianship court from choosing a stranger.
