Anthony Quinn bought 29 acres on Rhodes in 1960, a Greek court cancelled the sale in 1984, and he died before he was repaid
After filming on Rhodes, Anthony Quinn bought about 29 acres at Ladiko in 1960 for about £1,500†. His lawyer said Queen Frederica and the prime minister endorsed the deal. Greek law bars foreigners from owning land in border areas, and parliament never ratified the sale. In 1984 a Rhodes court annulled it. Quinn countersued for about £300,000 he had spent on landscaping and building†. In 1995 he left his second wife, Iolanda Addolori, for his secretary, Kathy Benvin, who had borne two of his children. The divorce trial over property that included a Picasso was settled in August 1997; Quinn called the fight "very painful." He died on 3 June 2001, aged 86, and was buried on his estate in Bristol, Rhode Island. His widow, Katherine Quinn, went to Rhodes in 2007 to claim just over two acres the family had developed, by then worth almost £1 million. The Greek state classifies the land as shoreline. In 2025 To Vima reported the land dispute between his widow and children and the state, with no outcome. The beach is called Anthony Quinn Bay.
Land bought abroad against a local ownership law can be taken back by a court, and the heirs inherit only the lawsuit.
