Franco's forces seized the Masonic temple of Santa Cruz de Tenerife on 19 July 1936, used it for interrogations, and Spain moved to declare it a memorial in 2025
The Añaza lodge was founded in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on 8 August 1895. Between 1899 and 1902 it built a temple on Calle San Lucas; the Spanish state's 2025 notice calls it the first Masonic building made expressly to be a temple. It ran a free secular school for adults from 1909. In 1931 the lodge split, and the smaller faction was expelled from the temple. Franco signed the decree of the military rising in Santa Cruz in July 1936. On 19 July a paramilitary group raided the temple and seized all its archives, which were sent to Salamanca. The Falange ran guided visits to the lodge's reflection chamber and kept the building as its headquarters until 1939. It then became a military food store and a military pharmacy. After the law of 1 March 1940, which punished Masons with prison and confiscation, it was used for interrogations and torture. In 2009 repairers found human remains in it. The Salamanca archive holds about 80,000 files on alleged Masons; there were about 5,000 Masons in Spain in 1936. The city council owns the temple and began a 3-million-euro restoration in 2022 to open a museum of Freemasonry. The lodge's papers were still in Salamanca in 2023. On 23 December 2025 the Secretary of State for Democratic Memory opened the procedure to declare the temple a Place of Democratic Memory.
Confiscated property can come back to the public but not to its owners; the temple belongs to the city, and the lodge's archive to the state.
