Spain's Supreme Court confirmed in March 2026 that Franco's grandchildren must give the Pazo de Meirás to the state

When Francisco Franco died he left 22 properties, including a chalet in Miami (EFE, 20 November 2025). On 5 December 1938 a provincial "Junta Pro-Pazo" of the civil governor and several mayors handed him the Pazo de Meirás in Sada, A Coruña. On 24 May 1941 a sale registered it in his name. In 2019 the state sued. On 2 September 2020 A Coruña's Court of First Instance No. 1 found the 1941 sale a sham and void, and refused the family compensation. In February 2021 the Audiencia Provincial confirmed state ownership but found the heirs acted in good faith and were owed their costs. On 11 March 2026 the Supreme Court unanimously confirmed that ruling. The amount will be set in enforcement, and the family's own figure is about €1 million†. The state also owns 559 items inside the house. Two statues from Santiago cathedral's Pórtico de la Gloria, held at Meirás, were ordered returned in June 2025. Article 41 of Ley 20/2022 abolished 33 titles, including "Duque de Franco" and "Señorío de Meirás." Franco was exhumed from the Valley of the Fallen on 24 October 2019 and reburied at Mingorrubio. His seven grandchildren, heirs since Carmen Franco died in 2017, have the Casa Cornide in A Coruña for sale at €3.5 million.

What the law took from it

A title deed is only as good as the transaction behind it, and a sham sale can be voided 79 years later.

Family version vs. the record

The heirs argued the donors meant to give the estate to Franco personally and that the purchase was legitimate. The court held the documents refer to "the caudillo" as head of state and called the purchase a fiction ( The Supreme Court found in 2026 that the family could not have held Meirás as owners until at least the 1990s (
