The Tata board removed Cyrus Mistry in 2016, and India's Supreme Court upheld it over the minority family's appeal
The Tata Trusts, charitable trusts set up by Tata family members, hold about 66% of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group†. The Shapoorji Pallonji Mistry family first bought into Tata Sons in the 1930s and owns about a fifth. Cyrus Mistry, a Mistry son, became chairman of Tata Sons in 2012†. On 24 October 2016 the Tata Sons board removed him. Ratan Tata, 78, who had retired in 2012, returned as interim chairman while a panel chose a successor within four months. Mistry stayed a director and went to the tribunals, alleging oppression of minority shareholders†. In December 2019 the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal ruled the appointment of N. Chandrasekaran as chairman illegal and restored Mistry. The Supreme Court stayed that order on 10 January 2020 and later upheld his removal†. Mistry died in a road crash on 4 September 2022. Ratan Tata died in October 2024†. On 11 October 2024 his half-brother Noel Tata, Mistry's brother-in-law, became chairman of the Tata Trusts†.
When charitable trusts hold the controlling block, the trustees, not the minority family, decide who runs the company.
