Ratan Tata's will gave a third of the residue to a little-known Jamshedpur businessman
Ratan Tata led the Tata Group from 1991 to 2012†. He never married and had no children. His will, dated 23 February 2022 with four codicils, was filed for probate in the Bombay High Court by executors Darius Kambatta, Mehli Mistry and his half-sisters Shireen and Deanna Jejeebhoy. Reports value his personal estate at about Rs 3,800 crore. Most of it goes to the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation and Trust. One of three residuary shares went to Mohini Mohan Dutta, a Jamshedpur businessman few people knew, worth more than Rs 500 crore by press estimates. Dutta has said he could receive as much as Rs 650 crore, and reports say he disagrees with the executors over the valuation. The will waived loans to his young assistant Shantanu Naidu and his neighbour Jake Malite. It included a no-contest clause: anyone who challenges it loses their bequest. Provision for his dog Tito was reported†.
A no-contest clause makes a beneficiary choose between the gift and a lawsuit.
