Historical event
Maharashtra inquiry into waqf land sales (2007 to 2015)

An orphanage trust sold its Mumbai plot for Antilia in 2002, the waqf board called the sale illegal, and the Bombay High Court dismissed the last challenge in 2025

The Currimbhoy Ebrahim Khoja orphanage trust was set up in 1892 to maintain and educate orphaned and poor boys of the Khoja community. It held a plot of about 4,532 square metres on Altamount Road. On 4 April 2002 the trust asked the Charity Commissioner for permission to sell it to Antilia Commercial Private Limited, which the Caravan reports the Ambanis control. Permission came on 27 August 2002, and the sale deed was signed on 21 November 2002 for about 21 crore rupees. The Caravan put the land's value at no less than 200 crore rupees in 2002. In November 2003 the Maharashtra waqf board listed the trust as waqf property, which needs board sanction to sell. In April 2004 the board issued a notice over the sale. In 2005 it accepted 16 lakh rupees and ratified the sale. A state commission under retired judge A. T. A. K. Sheikh reported in 2015 that two former board chief executives and a former chairman were guilty of misconduct for personal gain. In 2017 the board told the Bombay High Court that the sale and the 2005 ratification were illegal. Construction of the 27-storey Antilia began in 2006. On 28 July 2025 Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Sandeep Marne dismissed the public interest petition Abdul Mateen filed in 2007, holding that the nature of the property had already been adjudicated, and citing a Supreme Court ruling. Status: petition dismissed; no further appeal is reported in the sources found.

What the law took from it

Land held for orphans was sold while two regulators disputed which of them had to approve it, and the dispute ran for 23 years.
