A Delhi court ruled that Sushant Singh Rajput's publicity rights died with him, so his father could not stop a film about his death
The actor Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead at his flat in Bandra, Mumbai, in June 2020. In July 2020 his father, Krishna Kishore Singh, filed a police complaint in Patna accusing the actress Rhea Chakraborty and her family of abetting his suicide and misappropriating his money. The film "Nyay: The Justice", based on his life and death, was released on the platform Lapalap in June 2021. His father sued in the Delhi High Court, saying it was made without the consent of his son's legal representatives. On 11 July 2023 Justice C. Hari Shankar refused an injunction. He found that the characters were thinly disguised versions of the actor, Chakraborty and the father. He held that the actor's publicity and privacy rights "are not heritable. They died with the death of SSR." The father's claim for damages continued. In August 2023 he appealed, and a division bench of Justices Yashwant Varma and Dharmesh Sharma issued notice. In March 2025 the Central Bureau of Investigation filed closure reports in Patna and Mumbai, saying it found no foul play and no proof anyone abetted the suicide. The courts have not been reported as ruling on the appeal or the closure reports†.
In India a star's name and image are protected while he lives; after death, the family's only tool is a claim for damages.
