Stroessner's family wealth was never prosecuted, and human bones were found in his former house in 2019
Alfredo Stroessner ruled Paraguay from 1954 until a coup on 2 to 3 February 1989. He went into exile in Brazil on 5 February 1989. Between 1954 and 1989 about 8 million hectares of public land were handed out irregularly to people linked to the regime, and the state has not recovered it (BASE-IS). His son Gustavo left with him. A 1989 case against Gustavo for embezzlement was never tried and was closed after more than 20 years under the statute of limitations. He returned to Paraguay in 2010. Estimates of Gustavo's wealth range from US$500 million (his ex-wife) to US$850 million (author Aníbal Miranda). Stroessner died in Brasília in 2006, aged 93, and was buried there. On 4 September 2019 occupants of his former house in Ciudad del Este found human bones in a bathroom, and a state team that searches for people disappeared under the regime examined them. A 1990 expropriation law had given that property to the city, but his heirs recovered it in court. Land records list it under a company of grandson Alfredo "Goli" Domínguez Stroessner, a Colorado Party senator from 2008 to 2013. In September 2020 he demanded that the government bring his grandfather's remains home with honors. The remains were still in Brazil at that date.
Running out the clock on prosecution let this family keep assets that were never accounted for.
