Saladin left a gold ingot and 47 silver dirhams, not enough for his grave, and his brother took the empire from his sons

Saladin took Jerusalem in 1187 and fought Richard I to a truce in 1192. He died in Damascus on 4 March 1193. World History Encyclopedia, citing Amin Maalouf, says the treasury held one gold ingot from Tyre and 47 silver dirhams. Britannica says his friends found he had not left enough money to pay for his grave, while his relatives were already scrambling for pieces of the empire. He had divided his lands among kin. His sons took one city each: al-Afdal Damascus, al-Aziz Egypt, al-Zahir Aleppo. Al-Aziz attacked Damascus in 1194. Their uncle al-Adil, Saladin's brother, first made peace, then sided with al-Aziz, took Damascus in 1196 and sent al-Afdal to Salkhad. When al-Aziz died in 1198, al-Afdal became regent in Egypt for his nephew; al-Adil beat him at Bilbeis in 1200, and by 1202 al-Zahir accepted al-Adil's rule. The sons were left with fragments; al-Afdal died in 1225. Saladin's tomb is in Damascus. In 1898 Kaiser Wilhelm II laid a gilt bronze wreath on it. At the end of the First World War the wreath was removed; the museum says Sherif Feisal apparently presented it to T. E. Lawrence when they entered Damascus on 1 October 1918. Lawrence gave it to the Imperial War Museum on 11 November 1918, writing that he took it "as Saladin no longer required it". It is in the museum's collection in 2026.

What the law took from it

A fortune spent in life leaves heirs nothing but land, and land goes to the strongest relative.
