Historical event
The war of succession between Süleyman's sons Selim and Bayezid, 1559

Süleyman paid the Shah of Persia to hand back his son Bayezid, who was strangled in Qazvin with his four sons

After Mustafa's death and their mother Hürrem's death on 15 April 1558, two sons were left: Selim and Bayezid. Bayezid feared the clause in Mehmed II's law code that let a new sultan kill his brothers. In 1558 Süleyman moved Bayezid to Amasya; Bayezid called it a move "from paradise to hell" and asked, "Does a padishah lie?" Ebussuud and other jurists issued fatwas calling him a rebel whose killing was required. On 30 May 1559 Bayezid's army of about 30,000 lost a two-day battle to Selim outside Konya. With his sons Orhan, Osman, Mahmud and Abdullah he crossed into Persia in August 1559. Shah Tahmasp received him at Qazvin and had jewels scattered over his head, then on 16 April 1560 imprisoned him and his sons. The Shah bargained. Süleyman agreed to pay 1,200,000 gold pieces and give up the fortress of Kars, and Selim promised friendship with Persia. On 23 July 1562 Bayezid was handed to Selim's officer Ali Ağa and strangled on the spot; his four sons followed. A three-year-old fifth son was killed in Bursa. The bodies were buried outside the walls of Sivas in a tomb that no longer stands. The Ottomans then sent Tahmasp 500,000 florins and gifts, less than promised.

What the law took from it
