Two Rothschild banks went to law over who could use the family name alone, and settled in 2018 that neither may
The Rothschild banks descend from Mayer Amschel Rothschild of Frankfurt. In 2012 Baron David de Rothschild united Rothschild & Cie of Paris with N M Rothschild of London. The Geneva-based Edmond de Rothschild Group, led by Benjamin de Rothschild, son of Edmond, stayed outside and held almost 8 percent of the Paris holding company. In late January 2015 Benjamin's wife Ariane became the Geneva group's chief executive. That March it objected that the Paris firm called itself "parent of the Rothschild group". In 2015 Edmond de Rothschild sued Rothschild & Co, arguing that using the name on its own confused clients. Rothschild & Co was led by Benjamin's nephew Alexandre. On 29 June 2018 the two groups settled. Their joint statement said: "Neither group may use the name Rothschild on its own in any form whatsoever in the future." Rothschild & Co paid €75 million in cash, the two unwound their cross-shareholdings, and its private bank in France, Belgium and Monaco became Rothschild Martin Maurel. Edmond de Rothschild was taken off the stock exchange in 2019. Benjamin de Rothschild died of a heart attack at his home in Pregny, Switzerland, on 15 January 2021, aged 57. He left his wife Ariane and four daughters.
A family name shared by several branches needs written rules on who may use it, or a court will write them.
