Orson Welles's daughter Beatrice sued his partner Oja Kodar, fought her over The Other Side of the Wind, and lost her claim to the Citizen Kane copyright

Orson Welles died in Los Angeles on 10 October 1985. He left a wife, Paola Mori, and a partner of about 20 years, the Croatian actress Oja Kodar. Mori died in August 1986 after a car crash. Their daughter, Beatrice Welles, sued over the estate left to Kodar, and the two women signed a settlement in a Clark County, Nevada courthouse on 7 November 1986†. Welles's unfinished film The Other Side of the Wind, shot from 23 August 1970, was financed by Mehdi Boushehri, brother-in-law of the Shah of Iran. Boushehri kept the material in Paris, and 1,083 reels of negative sat in a Paris warehouse under court order. Beatrice, Boushehri's side and Kodar all held rights, and a Showtime completion deal collapsed when Beatrice claimed a right to approve it. Netflix bought world rights in March 2017, the negative was flown to Los Angeles, and the film opened on 2 November 2018. In 2003 Beatrice sued Turner Entertainment, claiming the copyright and home video rights to Citizen Kane. On 30 May 2007 the Ninth Circuit held that RKO had owned the copyright from the start, and sent the home video and royalty claims back for trial; her lawyer later reported a confidential settlement†. On 7 May 1987 Welles's ashes were put in a dry well on bullfighter Antonio Ordóñez's ranch, El Recreo de San Cayetano, near Ronda, and covered with bullring sand. Some of Ordóñez's ashes joined them after his death in 1998.

What the law took from it

A creator who divides his life between a wife and a partner, and his film rights among investors, leaves each of them a veto over the others.
